Málek, Michal ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
The diploma thesis Analysis of the Sunday Columns of České Slovo and Venkov in Selected Years is devoted to the analysis of sunday supplements and columns of the daily newspapers České slovo and Venkov in 1933 and 1943. The aim of the thesis was to find out what these supplements and columns looked like, what topics they dealt with, what their character was and how they changed in the selected time horizon and historical context. A content analysis of the sunday newspaper columns and supplements was used to determine what these columns looked like, what their structure was, and what topics they covered. The analysis itself always included the first sunday edition of each month from 1933 and 1943. The analysis also showed that the sunday columns and supplements of both newspapers had an entertainment function and provided readers with mainly relaxing reading in the form of fiction and interest or popular science columns. In addition, it was found that these sunday columns were also largely aimed at women and children, to whom separate supplements and columns were devoted. The diploma thesis also explains how the different political focus of the two newspapers was reflected in these sunday supplements and how this content were affected by propaganda during the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia.

The period from 13 May 1989 to 26 June 1989 was chosen for the analysis, as it fully covers the situation preceding the massacre, the massacre of 4 June 1989 itslelf and its aftermath. In order to achieve the most accurate results, qualitative content analysis and so-called grounded theory will be used. The questions that will be answered through this thesis concern the specific aspects on which the individual newspapers placed emphasis, as well as how often the events were covered and with what temporal sequence, then which language features were used, and which reporting principles were applied within the news and journalistic texts. Based on the data collected, it was found that Rudé právo, ideologically charting communist mindset in China, held similar views to the Chinese Government, i.e. that the students attempted to overthrow the Government and the regime, and during the actual suppression of the protests, the soldiers were attacked by the students, not the other way around. The Guardian and The New York Times reported on the protests in a quite opposite way, regarding the protests as pro-democracy and the military...

Kyjonková, Petra ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Gibarti, Jana (referee)
Rigorous thesis "Disruptive media technologies - theories and application to the Czech media environment" deals with a concept of disruptive technologies, which results from the economical model of creative destruction made by founder of innovation theories Joseph Alois Schumpter. Although he had described adverse impact on present market structure at the beginning of 20th century, media studies revealed them lately, precisely in the year 1995 in an economical model of another economist Clayton Christensen. In the late 20th century, with the evolution of the internet, first studies based on media corporations' trade model have investigate disruptive impact of new communication channels on the older ones. This rigorous thesis transmits these analyses onto Czech media environment, which is still strongly affected by the transformation process started 20 years ago. It illustrates the influence of the whole transmutation on the innovation process and the reason why it is so necessary to examine it separately for all Post-communist countries. This work then discusses the impact of internet as a new sort of media on the market, especially analyzing the symbiosis of the internet version and the printed version of the Lidové noviny journal, and unfolds the weak points and the potentials of this co-existence, not...

Crisis in the institute for the study of totalitarian regimes in czech periodic press
Svorník, Petr ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Křeček, Jan (referee)
The main aim of this thesis is to prove that the style of news coverage of one topic in three different Czech newspapers differs significantly, based on ideology of authors and newspapers too. News reporting should be informative, unbiased, without assessments of its author. However the resulting article is always biased in some way. The author doesn't have to use evaluating words to evaluate; he or she can affect the result by choosing right speakers, placing them in favorable or disadvantageous position or even cut them out of the text. The author can choose which story to tell and which frame to use. This thesis focuses on crisis in the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes in April of 2013, when the director Daniel Herman was dismissed and new director Pavla Foglová was appointed. This event is suitable for the study of (hidden) evaluation and ideology, because it is closely connected with communist history of Czech nation - everyone has some opinion about it, journalists included. After the theoretical explanation of main terms and concepts like signification, discourse and ideology comes the analysis of three non-tabloid Czech newspapers: Lidové noviny, Mladá fronta DNES and Právo. Their story is the main subject of this thesis.
